We're now obsessed with coffee.
But the coffee they were drinking was not the sort of thing that you'd get in um Cafe Nero today.
So it was a case of hate the taste, love the effect?
Well also, of course, these were very uh masculine spaces.
If there were women in coffee houses, they were probably working there.
And there is I mean, one of the great things about this period from a literary point of view is you get the great satire boom.
And um one of the first satires was about coffee and men in coffee houses.

Last time we left London at the end of England's Republican experiment, with Cromwell in failing health.
And with Charles I's son, another Charles, waiting abroad in the Low Countries.
