You know, Hunger was a difficult book to write.
And people often express, oh, you were so brave.
And I was like, no, no, no.
I was really scared.
It took me a long time to even start writing the book because I was so afraid of making myself vulnerable in that way.
But I remember when I was first conceiving of the book, I thought, and I've said this in interviews before, but I really did think.
oh, the thing I really don't want to write about is fatness.
And then that ended up being the thing I understood immediately was like, oh, that's probably what I need to write about then because the fact that I immediately have this clarity that I never want to write about it lets me know that there's probably something very intellectually fruitful there.
And there was, but it's also really challenging to write about the body that you're living in, the body that is the subject of public disdain and derision.
And it's so challenging because a lot of times when you write about fatness, people say, like, if it was really that challenging or really that difficult, you'd do something about the problem.
And there's not a lot of cultural empathy for fatness.
No, there isn't.
At all.
No, not at all.
And I honestly think in some ways it's probably – I don't want to say it's more difficult.
I don't think we can compare these things.
Right.
But I think people who are like on the smaller end of the fat spectrum deal with challenges.
I think that there's different challenges at each sort of point on the fat spectrum.
