Well, I was talking about how it probably, for all I know, started by a cattle raid or some little small thing involving a woman.
And over hundreds and hundreds of years, that was built up into an epic, supposedly glorious narrative, right?
So the mechanism for that is oral poetics, where it's all done orally.
There's no writing involved.
So for hundreds of years, the poets are passing the song.
It's like a chanted song down from one to the other over the years and taking turns and embellishing it and expanding it and refining it.
And there's lots and lots of controversy as to whether there was like one big person who kind of put it all together at the end who we would call Homer or how it quite got to be that way.
We don't really know.
But the bottom line is it's not the product of a single author.
It's the product of a long tradition.
And then even if Homer didn't exist, they had to invent him, you know, to be... I was just about to ask you that.
Um, he became a brand for sure.
We don't know if he existed in the sense that there could have been one poet who was extra specially important in putting it all together.
Yeah.
And just at the point where it got written down and stabilized, but we really don't know.
And he is kind of a legendary figure.
The Greeks didn't have the kind of views that we do about what counts as faking.
