As time progresses, as this ideal kind of goes down, as the elites become more ascetic because they d they believe that the restriction of their urges and passions through, of course, um ordered eating is a sign of control, a sign of intelligence, right?
Everyone from Pope to Descartes talk about control of one's
appetites as a way to display of as as a d as a display of intelligence.
Um and so thinness becomes related to that specific idea of I am good, I am smart.
Um and then that also gets encoded in fashion.
Like when you think about like a Victorian corset, like that is a a a garment that pushes you to be even thinner as an expression of that believed virtue.
but what's interesting, of course, is that you have kind of two pendulums at the same time.
