Right, right.
And after 1900,
the push became even greater.
I don't need to be dramatic about what a big deal cars became at the time.
That's what newsreels from the 1940s are for.
That mechanical genius was Ford's Model T rolled out in 1908 and designed to be affordable and easy to operate.
After the Model T was introduced, that meant everybody could have a car.
In 1909, up by Detroit, a bunch of engineers laid the first mile of concrete pavement.
So that meant we could get hard roads.
But concrete pavement was expensive.
In 1910, Oklahoma had a grand total of 23 miles of what were called hard-surfaced roads.
Sy was pushing for more.
But he realized quickly local taxes weren't going to cover the cost.
And the federal government wasn't volunteering any funds.
So people said, well, we'll do it ourselves if Congress won't do it.
County commissioners like Cy and other good roadsmen organized a vigilante road-building effort.
They talked local groups into running road-building seminars.
They formed new associations dedicated to roads, left, right, and center.
