And that was a huge change for this country.
Cars and roads were ushering in a modern era, and not just for the big cities on the coast, but for suburban and rural communities, too.
So this was the future, in a nutshell.
Like, this road project, that was the future of the country.
Yeah.
If you wanted to build that future, you needed to build the roads.
Right.
So let's go back to Route 66.
1924.
Cy Avery had grown from a road evangelist to state highway commissioner for Oklahoma.
He was on at least three different boards working with the federal government to make national highways a reality.
But there's just one you need to keep track of.
The American Association of State Highway Officials.
Lots of the guys in this association had roots going back to the good roadsmen days of the late 1800s.
They were people who'd been lobbying for roads and highways for decades.
But by 1925, they'd amassed some real authority.
And they got together and asked the secretary of agriculture, who was the man ultimately in charge of rural roads, to appoint a committee to work together and figure out which ones of the major highways in each state would connect to
into a national highway system so that you could get in a car in Seattle and drive to Florida and not get lost and not run into the mud.
They got the go-ahead.
