By 1929, that number would balloon to 23 million.
And very, very little pavement.
So if you can imagine driving 2,400 miles, mostly on a dirt road, people were pretty exhausted.

This was not just a weekend deal.
This was serious business.
And while they waited to hear if and how the federal government might get involved, county commissioners like Cy Avery took matters into their own hands.
During those years, there became about 250 of these, what I call, do-it-yourself highways.
Some of them went across the country.
Some of them just went from one side of a state to another.
But the idea was that all the towns along the way would ante up money
They would promise to keep the road in as good of shape as they could.
And then the money would go to advertising.
Advertising.
Because Americans were starting to travel in greater numbers.
Previously, the American frontier had been a place you moved to, a place you never came back from.
But now, as the country was expanding, roads were also making it feel smaller, more accessible.
I think it may be that you could say that the country's identity changed because of the roads.
as people began to connect with each other.
You know, you don't send your daughter off to be married and go out West and never see her again.
