who call this classic zero-sum economics, the idea that there's only a fixed amount of work in the economy and that you have to sort of split it up.
Well, that's not really true.
That's the lump of labor fallacy, of course.
We can have grow-the-pie types of gains, productivity gains, new industry, new demand.
The classic case in lump of labor fallacy that everyone cites is ATMs.
There was a time where people thought ATMs were going to kill the jobs of bank tellers, you know, in the 70s and 80s.
What actually ended up happening in the decades that followed was we got more bank tellers.
They actually grew because demand increased.
And we've seen the same thing with radiologists.
You know, AI was supposed to wipe out radiology jobs and radiologist jobs are growing.
Even programmers right now, maybe not entry level, but
the demand for programmers, at least by some measures, is increasing as a result of AI.
They'll also point to deflation benefits to labor.
So they'll say AI is a deflationary force.
It's making everything cheaper in particular services.
So we want better healthcare services, time with a doctor.
Well, you have a doctor
on an app in your phone with doctor-level intelligence or a therapist or a psychologist or a lawyer or name your thing that you want to make more affordable.
This is all a deflationary effect and that will benefit labor as well.
