I was dealing so much in the minor leagues and throwing so many innings in a ball that Jim Henry, who was the general manager, made a fake press release that I made the Midwest league all-star team because I'd thrown that much down there.
It's pretty funny.
But, you know, when you have your ups and downs, and I think that's the one part about Tommy John, any surgery, but especially Tommy John, because you're dealing with elbow and you're dealing with ligament, you're dealing with nerve, that you're dealing with your fingertips.
So feel is a really hard thing to just kind of get, right?
Whether that's a breaking ball could be really sharp one day and the next day it's got a little bit of a hump and a little bit of a loop to it.
You know, you might have good zip on your fastball and the next day it's maybe not quite the command you want on it.
So, you know, it's just kind of a process.
And for me, going to the bullpen, I called them Cubs and was like, hey, like, listen, all our starters are throwing well.
We have Maddox, Pryor, Woods, Zambrano, Matt Clement.
I'm like, I'm just going to sit here wasting innings in the minor leagues.
Why don't I go in the bullpen?
And they're like, you would do that?
And I'm like, yeah.
And it ended up being a great thing for me, I think.
You know, just getting those innings where at the beginning weren't the highest of leverage.
And then as the season went on in August, September, I started getting some save opportunities.
And that led to me closing the next year.
I made six starts.
