Welcome to the Backpack and Light podcast, where we investigate the intersection of science and technology, gear design, and wilderness experience to help you develop a deep foundation of true backcountry expertise.
In today's episode, we explore the concept of thermoregulatory debt.
Today's episode is sponsored by Bryna of Norway.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Backpacking Light podcast.
I'm your host, Ryan Jordan, and today we are talking about thermoregulatory debt.
By thermoregulatory debt, I mean the delayed physiological and functional cost that results when clothing, movement, weather, moisture, and heat production fall out of balance.
But before we go there, let's dive into what's new at Backpack and Light because we have a lot going on right now.
The big news this spring is that we launched a major new software app called TRIPS, which is now the anchor of the backpacking light trek planning ecosystem.
TRIPS is our patent pending backcountry planning software that uses terrain geometry, physiology, and itinerary planning to model energy demand and travel time and fatigue risk signals.
Signaling.
It lets you import a GPX file, split a route into days, position campsites, identify resupply points, inspect overall route and daily terrain and energy diagnostics, compare planned versions, save plans, and calibrate from your existing wearable data if you want deeper personalization and better predictive modeling.
TRIPS was created to address the issue that mileage and elevation alone cannot answer, which is the question of how hard is this hike?
Time and time again,
We all plan routes that look reasonable on paper but still contain days that are surprisingly hard or too long or too steep, too backloaded, or too affected by food weight, altitude, sleep, pacing, or accumulated fatigue.
And trips help identify these types of difficulties and gives you the framework for adjusting your itinerary to give you the best possible.
possible experience and outcome when you're out on the trail.
Unlimited members get free access to TRIPS, and we're hosting an introduction to TRIPS webinar on June 24th.
