This is the obvious one.
That clammy feeling when you that you get when your base layer sticks to your skin, that's kind of a sign that liquid moisture is accumulating faster than your clothing system can move it or dry it.
And that's that's an uncomfortable feeling, right?
Second, moisture takes time to dry.
Once moisture gets into your clothing system, you may not have the conditions needed to remove it quickly, especially in cold, humid, or stormy weather.
You can only dry clothing later on if conditions are dry, breezy, or sunny.
And until that happens, your ability to dry your clothing will be somewhat limited.
And third, moisture increases heat loss.
Wet clothing conducts heat away from your body more efficiently than dry clothing.
And as that moisture evaporates, it can pull even more heat from your skin and your clothing system.
And that brings us to the second type of thermoregulatory debt, which is heat debt.
Heat debt refers to the thermoregulatory.
Imbalance of your core body temperature.
In other words, you are losing heat to the environment faster than your body's metabolic activity can replenish it.
Heat debt is often the consequence of taking on too much moisture debt in your clothing system.
But it can also happen when your insulation is inadequate, your caloric intake is low.
Your exposure to the elements is particularly high, or when your pace slows down or you come to a rest.
Heat debt occurs when your body loses heat to the environment through conduction, or when cold air strips heat away from your clothing system through convection, or when your body radiates heat into the surrounding environment, that's radiation, or
Or when moisture evaporates from your skin or clothing and pulls heat away in the process, and that's evaporation.
And then as your body begins to cool, it has to work harder to maintain its core temperature.
