You start sweating, you get wet skin, there's moisture in your clothing, your skin temperature cools, your core body temperature cools.
This is the point at which your credit card bill kind of arrives in the mail, so to speak.
And then you have phase three.
This is when you start to feel some discomfort, usually during some kind of change of state in your activity or your environment, like a stop, a descent, arriving at an exposed ridge, stopping to cook a meal, or maybe it's that first hour inside your shelter when you retire for the evening.
This is when you actually have to write the check to pay the bill from your body's thermoregulatory.
Bank account balance.
Now, I want to reiterate the most important point about this thermoregulatory debt model is this.
You can create the cost before you feel the problem.
Ah, there's the insidious nature of all forms of debt, right?
All right, with that as an introduction, let's walk through three types of thermoregulatory debt: moisture debt, heat debt,
debt and performance debt.
Moisture debt is simply the accumulation of liquid moisture in your clothing layering system.
And it happens like this.
Moisture debt happens when you start to sweat, and that sweat results in wet skin.
Or when you allow outside moisture, like rain or snow, into your clothing system.
Or maybe it results from moisture vapor in warm air trapped in your clothing system, then condensing into liquid moisture in your layers.
And then any moisture that happens to be on your skin or otherwise
otherwise present in your clothing system can then wick or otherwise migrate into your other clothing layers, even those that may not be next to your skin.
Moisture debt is a problem for three reasons.
First, it makes you uncomfortable.
