pretty terrifying and the number of incidents experienced by people who are hiking and camping in the backcountry was actually pretty alarming to me.

So in this article, I dove into a specific campsite selection problem.

Trees and branches can fail, and backpackers often sleep beneath or near trees and dead trees for long periods of time.

And to me, that's a probability risk hazard analysis.

So I wanted to give backcountry users some confidence about how to manage that risk.

The main point I wanted to make is that sleeping beneath standing timber should involve an assessment of what could fall, where it could land, and whether wind, soil saturation, fire history, deadlambs, or other visible indicators increase the likelihood of that failure.

Okay, so that's the falling trees article.

We also published an article about REI's ongoing labor dispute.

If you've been following along, you may be aware of a collision course between declining profits at REI co-op over the past few years and a growing unionization movement within the REI workforce.

It all came to a bit of a head recently as REI declared impasse in their union negotiations, while the union called for a boycott of the REI anniversary sale last month.

Now, REI is a member-owned co-op.

So when the company makes public claims about financial pressure or benefit changes or bargaining status or union negotiations, the question is not just about the company's policies and positions on these issues.

It's about whether members have enough evidence to evaluate that position.

After all, we as REI members are supposed to have a say through our voting rights and board governance and the election of directors.

So it's pretty important for us to have transparent information so we can make informed voting decisions about the direction of the co-op.

Now, anytime a corporate labor dispute comes up, I'll warn you, there's a lot of rhetoric and accusations flying around.

And I really wanted to focus on the facts, give both REI and the union the opportunity to answer some of my questions, and most important, provide factual evidence to REI members about the conflict.

Now, I want you to understand, I did not write the article as an attempt to resolve every claim made by REI or the REI union.
