What I think for most people, if you are wired that way, it is to say you need to find your quest.
Humans need a quest.
That is why I'm so anti-universal basic income and all of these things they're talking about for the future with AI, because I just think that so much of human happiness comes from meaningful struggle.
You endure the quest, you go through that.
And the way you find that is by taking action.
I have found this consistently across everyone that I know, all of the high performers I've spent time with, all the three years of research for this book.
It is just to say that you have to have a violent bias for action if you are going to find your quest.
You don't just chance upon it.
It's not like, oh, the quest just magically appears in front of you.
You solve thousands of puzzles on a day-to-day basis, and the quest reveals itself.
But it is through a violent bias for action.
I had this epiphany watching Apollo 13, that movie, you know, like Tom Hanks, Return from Space.
Old movie.
I love Ron Howard, Academy Award winner for it, I think.
But, there's this scene at the very end of it, a climactic scene.
They're trying to enter back into the atmosphere, and basically, they find out that if they come in too steep, they're going to blow up, and if they come in too shallow, they're going to skip off like a rock on a pond and just be floating in space until they die.
And they have to come in at the perfect angle, and they have to do it without computers.
So, there's no computers to manage this whole thing.
And Tom Hanks has this moment where he just says, like, well, can't I just keep this Earth in the window here, in this triangular window?
And if I do that, it's going to allow us to maintain the angle that we need to be at and get back into the atmosphere safely.
