So I'm not going to do it.
And look, in a month, I took my screen time down by four hours a day, which is embarrassing that it was so high.
But if you play that out over a year, that is 68 days of awake time that I just reclaimed, that I previously would have been spending on my phone, that I now am able to be out in the world or do work or actually interact with people.
and so if you're a young person you want to build relationships or you want to just be happier in your life it's like go outside spend time in person with people and stop following and reading the news so damn much like the news is just lying to you it is creating a completely skewed perspective of what the world looks like full stop because the entire thing is driven by an economic incentive and the economic incentive means that they only show negative
and rage-inducing content, because that's what generates clicks and shares, and that's what makes them money.
So that's what you're going to see.
That's what the algorithms are going to push.
And what it means is that your perspective on reality is going to be very dislocated from what real reality looks like.
My big thing was, I had this exact same fear.
The big thing that helped me was realizing that, so you use your phone for work purposes, right?
It's like, well, all of those apps, like messaging in particular, you do that on your computer.
And I want to do work on my computer, and my phone is only going to be for real phone-only use cases, which really for me is like...
emergency situations calling you know people if i need to coordinating things with my family or like posting something on social media literally any other thing that i do can be done from my computer and that's when i'm at my desk so it was effectively creating a separation to say like my phone is going to be almost like a dumb phone might as well be like a nokia you know flip phone at this point and my computer is going to be for work like real work purposes and
In between those two, I don't need to have it.
It's not there.
It's only getting in the way of me showing up in the world the way I want to.
This is rooted in a lot of ancient wisdom.
I think, really, you go back to the Bhagavad Gita.
It's like this ancient Hindu text.
It's like this idea of dharma, like your sacred duty of going off on your own hero's journey.
