So he sort of said, Look, there's a lot of uncertainty about the outlook and and you know, did did sort of say we could in voice-verified
in theory be back sort of to where we were uh in I guess in February where the market was pricing in multiple rate cuts for the year and, you know, that could be a possible outcome if inflation behaves. voice-verified
Or, you know, he did sort of say, um, you know, I could also see circumstances where we might need to raise rates uh if things were going a different way. voice-verified
So he was having a a bet each way. voice-verified
Um not not surprising given there is so much uncertainty uh voice-verified
uh uh about the about the outlook. voice-verified
But I guess, you know, it just sort of follows on from uh some of the comments that the Fed chair made at his press conference last week where, you know, he did talk about the fact that there were some members who, you know, could see a path towards higher rates over the course of this year under certain circumstances. voice-verified
Yeah, that's right. voice-verified
And I think uh, you know, there's a sensitivity amongst central bankers um that's been reflected pretty well in in the last week or two, where I think they are quite worried that I guess the scars uh of that post-COVID high inflation period um, you know, are are still pretty raw in the minds of households and and also businesses. voice-verified
Uh and so, you know, for that reason they're too voice-verified
To focus on the inflationary impact of the war. voice-verified
And I think certainly some of the price rises. voice-verified
that we're hearing our customers uh talk about in in the sense that that's what their suppliers are conveying to them are are pretty meaningful. voice-verified
And so we're not talking about uh, you know, the price of an input going up sort of five or ten percent. voice-verified
And so therefore businesses feeling that they could probably absorb that for a while. voice-verified
We're talking about, you know, input prices in some cases going up sort of twenty five, thirty percent, possibly even more. voice-verified
And they're the sort of increases voice-verified
That as a business, you just can't really absorb that. voice-verified
You have no option except to pass it on. voice-verified
And so this is what I think is fueling some of the anxiety around uh, you know, how inflation behaves. voice-verified
