It doesn't just have to be what happened last week.

And in many cases with me over the years,

Ideas have stuck in my head for a very long time before I found the way to write about them.

I mean, I wanted to write about being at university in the late 60s.

I wanted to write about Cambridge for a long time.

I just never found the story.

And it's taken me half a century to find the story.

And India, I returned to it.

And it's not just India.

It's not just Mumbai.

It's a particular neighborhood, which is where I grew up, that has this magic power over me that I keep coming back to it.

And what is that like for you?

Well, I mean, it has an element of nostalgia.

But I want the stories not to feel like

oh dear, weren't things better in the good old days?

I mean, the good old days are just as bad as the bad old days.

Well, what happened is from about the third day after the attack, when it was becoming clear that I was going to make it, my wife Eliza and I decided that we should make a record of what was happening.

And initially I thought she would just take a picture of me with her iPhone every day or two.

to chronicle the recovery.

But because she is, as well as being a poet and a novelist and a memoirist and everything else, she's also a very, very good photographer and videographer.
