So she sent for her camera and we made a video record, not every day, but quite frequently over a year, of the injuries and the recovery.
And nobody's ever seen this footage.
And eventually we thought maybe there was a wider audience.
Initially, we just thought we were doing it for ourselves.
But eventually we came to think that maybe there was a wider audience for it, and maybe it would be important to show
what happened in the defense of free speech, as we were again saying earlier.
So we started talking to documentary film directors.
And when we met Alex Gibney and heard his views about how he wanted to go about it, we liked him very much.
And so it ended up being a film using Eliza's film material, but going beyond that into a wider story.
Was it hard watching back that material?
Well, it wasn't a bunch of fun.
I mean, I've seen it now a couple of times and I really don't see the need to watch it anymore.
I think I hope everybody else watches it, but I think I don't need to.
Yeah, I mean, it was for a long time under embargo because that material was needed for the trial.
and it was shown to the jury during the trial, but it wasn't shown to me at that time.
And it's only recently that, yes, it was, I mean, actually, about one week before the film was premiered at Sundance Festival was the moment when my wife and I saw the final cut, and that's the first time I saw that footage.
Well, you know, of course it was shocking, but at the same time,
It's almost four years ago now, and I'm better now.
So I was looking at it from a position of health and survival.
And that felt good.
