So Nine put in a bid.

Nine Entertainment is this media company.

It owns Stan, it owns Stan Sport, it owns the newspaper I work for, the AFR.

and Channel 9, obviously.

So they put in a bid for everything.

They wanted to knock Foxtel out for the first time since the NRL began.

And they wanted to put it all on Stansport instead.

And so they offered some massive amount.

Foxtel couldn't let that happen.

So they had to counter with their own massive amount.

So that sort of generated the competitive tension here that was really necessary.

Because if you've got the same two companies, they don't need to bid that much more to get it.

So you had that competitive tension.

You had Amazon sort of circling around, maybe interested in one night a week or a couple of games.

The word that I heard was that they wanted to call it something like Prime Friday or something like that on Amazon Prime Video.

But to counter what Nine wanted to do, Foxtel had to go out and get its own free-to-air network because there have to be some games for free.

Under the laws that we currently have, there have to be some NRL games for free.

And so they found Channel 10 and Channel 7 both willing to take some games.

So divided between them, they can afford to pay it, but then Nine would lose everything.

So in the end, last week, what we reported was that Foxtel and Nine basically came to some sort of agreement where it was like, okay, this is what we're actually willing to pay and willing to offer.
