And China wasn't there because the powers couldn't decide on whether or not the KMT or the Republic of China or the People's Republic of China was the appropriate representative.

So neither of them came.

But what was decided in that settlement was how the former Japanese imperial possessions in Asia would be redistributed.

So this bears on these enduring issues we now face around the South China Sea and China's proposed

And of course the Korean Peninsula and the status of Taiwan.

Long term, it it hems in China's potential and its ambitions.

But in the medium term, I think Beijing has been really pragmatic, imaginative, very successful in adapting to this order.

And this party won most of its wars or most of its victories in guerrilla warfare.

So I think this strategy of adapting to what is available is something that Beijing

Often exhibits.

This system has been supported principally by the US in terms of the the costs of the system.

And by those I mean keeping freedom of navigation and the global sea lanes open that facilitate the system of global trade that both America and China have benefited from enormously, as well as the financial system, the financial architecture that's enabled this cross-border flow of resources and money.

And in some cases, even maintaining stability in places where China has important assets, the US has too.

I've I've heard anecdotes that Chinese companies in Afghanistan were relieved that about certain periods of American intervention, because they they had similar concerns.

This has been, relatively speaking, a lower cost experience than the American experience, which in order to do these things,

requires a a huge global network of military bases and all the costs of keeping those up, as well as the reputational risks and strategic risks of being entangled in conflicts and so on.

So, what did China do within the system?

Well, they used it to learn, to trade, and to grow while also developing the capabilities that have allowed it to become strong.

And that's really the story of China's growth.

It's important to point out, I think, that this was this didn't happen by chance.
