Xpeng stood on a stage in Melbourne this week and told Australian media something that sounds, to some people, absurd.

BYD is not our competitor, Tesla is.

Now, BYD obviously disagrees with this because BYD, they are claiming they have the technology to beat Tesla and Xpeng.

No one's seen that technology yet, but BYD say they have it.

They say they've actually got their own chip foundry that can make advanced chips that are even more advanced than Tesla's and Xpeng's chips, but we haven't seen those yet either.

So BYD is not our competitor, Tesla is, that's what XPeng had to say.

XPeng's head of international development, Alex Tang, said the company does not see BYD as a rival at all, not in China, not globally, because the brand positioning, the products and the customers are all different.

The company it will name as a benchmark is Tesla, which Xpeng describes as a tier one global player on technology.

Now, if you're thinking about just pure car sales, I mean, do people compare maybe an Xpeng G6 versus a BWD C-Line versus a Tesla Model Y?

And therefore, are they competitors in that sense?

Of course they are.

I mean, you'd have to be a brain dead idiot to think that they were not.

People do.

I mean, people have bought Teslas and bought Xpengs and bought BWDs in the same family.
