BWD was late to say it out loud.
It is not absent, though.
It is focusing on those products, just not as much as Tesla and XPeng.
I would say BWD is probably about four to five years behind Tesla and XPeng when it comes to artificial intelligence.
The other thing XPeng can't wave away, though, is scale.
BWD sold 321,000 vehicles in a single month in China in April.
It's a lot more cars, and that's giving BWD the ability to hire more people and grow faster.
That's an argument for BWD, not against it.
Here's my read.
Xpeng is correct about the direction.
This race to the bottom in the automotive industry, it only ends one way, and that is many car companies will disappear.
Small ones, even medium-sized ones will disappear.
But that's probably not really where things are going to end up, is it?
I mean, can you realistically see people buying in 2040 a car that doesn't have full self-driving?
I think that most people won't want to do that when they don't have to.
The fight is genuinely moving away from kilowatt hours and charging times to chips, foundation models, AI, and autonomy.
And Xpeng is further down that road than maybe anyone except for Tesla.
But telling the world BWD doesn't matter, that's a very confident, maybe slightly arrogant thing to say when BWD builds more cars in a fortnight than you build in a year.
And yes, guys, like I said, I'm still blacklisted by Xpeng, so none of this has come from their PR department, unlike all the other articles you'll see online in the next 24 hours.
