But obviously, there are a lot of people that are.
And the really big concern is that when you have startups, that they are not in a position to basically use some of these things to make their tax situation better because they're coming off a sort of zero base, right?
So the Prime Minister made some comments again on Thursday with regard to this.
We're introducing a permanent loss carryback to support resilience, investment and risk-taking, helping up to 85,000 companies a year.
We're introducing loss refundability to help up to 25,000 start-ups per year grow in their early years.
We're expanding tax incentives for venture capital to unlock industry knowledge for young expanding firms and we're better targeting the R&D tax incentive.
The government, though, is sending some very clear signals, I think, that they don't want to make major, major carve-outs.
So I think that really the government is pretty full speed ahead and it's worth thinking a little bit about, I suppose, why that is.
Well, because they believe in it, right?
I mean, they believe that the tax system as it stands is too generous to people that are wealthy who have accountants, basically, who can set up trusts, who can set up CGT, who can buy an investment property, who can reduce their income tax, can do all of these things.
And look, my personal gut instinct, and it's just that, is that I think the government does want to put downward pressure on house prices, but I think that that is, to some extent, it's going to be quite modest.
I think the idea that it's going to create 70,000 people who otherwise wouldn't have entered the housing market to do so is lovely, but it's a tiny amount of people, right?
It's not really that big in the grand scheme of things, 70,000 over 10 years.
And how on earth do you even quantify that at the end of a decade, right?
Yeah.
I've got no idea.
I think what it's really about is the government thinks that the tax system is unfair to working Australians earning a wage.
I think this budget was about saying, if we don't do this now, we do it never.
What is the point of being a Labor government if you don't make changes like this?
Are we going to take some bark off us?
