If the outcome goes a different way, then you're going to have loyalists saying, hang on a minute, we're not accepting this.
And I think the fundamental danger that goes beyond parading, goes beyond what any of us think about this issue,
is that what this tends towards is saying might is right.
If you get enough people into a road, you can decide what happens.
Forget the courts, forget the police, forget the government, forget any commission or what any law says.
We can decide this for ourselves.
Now, some people will agree with that here.
Some people will disagree with that.
But think about that in another context.
Think about that in a context of race or migration.
Think about that in a context of sexuality or any of the number of issues where people might have their rights protected by the law as a minority.
You go to court, you assert your rights and you're protected by the state.
We're in really dangerous territory if it's simply the case that we say, forget what the court says, we're going to do this.
And there was a line in that Parades Commission determination, which when I read it, it jumped out at me way before this.
And I had no reason to believe that any of this was going to happen again.
But I read it and I thought it alluded to something quite concerning because the commission, as Alison says, did say, the police said to them, that they didn't have evidence that there was going to be trouble.
And essentially what that, to me, said, if you're being really cynical about this, is the residents weren't being threatening enough.
And if they had been, the commission might have said, no, you're not doing this.
And that's really dangerous.
You get into territory here, we are actually incentivising people towards threats when actually the peace process and the commission and all of this architecture is meant to be moving us away from the idea that parades are things that tend towards violence, that tend towards aggression.
