There was Mel working away.

He was immediately a star in L.A.

And perhaps I might have done things differently if I'd gone to L.A., but I've never really liked there.

I've never really liked... We were talking about ambition before, and I was always uncomfortable around ambitious people.

In order to just survive in LA, you've got to be ambitious.

So my career was much more sort of European orientated.

I've never really been comfortable with American accents where I can sort of do an English accent possibly and I can do European accents.

I've never really understood the difference between an Australian and a New Zealand accent, which is probably a bit of a... I like to justify that I'm about to do a film in which I'm playing a pretty icy bloke, but then I found out to my great delight he's actually born in New Zealand, so... You know, when I get criticised for my accent, that'll be trumpet on the table, you know?

So I might have had more of a Hollywood career, but I'm completely astonished that I've had the career that I've had at all.

So, no, I don't regret anything.

Well, I actually lived in London for about seven years.

So I met a girl, you know, as these things happen, and made a lot of friends over there.

So I was sort of coming and going between Australia and New Zealand and England, really, rather than going to America.

i did end up doing a few things in america and some of them are better than others but um having said that about los angeles i like working there it's just i don't like hanging out there yeah and if i'm going to hang out might as well be here in sydney with my friends or on the farm with other friends or or england where i've got lots of people i know so

It's a place where I find after a few weeks I'm actually interested in trivia like which film has made what money at the box office last week.

Now, these things are of no consequence to anybody.

But they become consequential when you're there.

So you realise you're actually going to pieces.

You're deteriorating rapidly and it's time to get out.
