And that made for great competition.

So Christchurch, there was really interesting stuff coming out of Christchurch when I was at school and at university.

And that really stimulated my interest in architecture.

They were terrific.

But so much of that stuff has been completely destroyed and never seen again.

There was a couple of guys who came to Wellington too who were refugees from Germany who were building some very interesting stuff in the 50s too.

It all starts with Bauhaus.

Asfield was brilliant.

But again, the move away from modernist stuff was very much a part of their thing.

They were very interested in colonial architecture.

Brought back all those tropes.

So you had those mad buildings spilling down, steep hillsides in Wellington, which were great.

But then when other people take on those things, it gets diminished, and that drive...

One of your films talks about that.

It wasn't so much into the McMansion thing, but it was a sort of yearning for a Victorian kind of innocence.

I mean, one of the things I like working with architects, I've built quite a few things over the years, is I really like that dialogue.

So you sort of meet each other halfway.

And you get better buildings out of that.

I'm told.
