How do the New Zealand people view you today?
I don't really know because they still don't say anything.
What medals did you get?
I got an OBE a long time ago, and then I got something called DCNZM.
Congratulations.
Well, it's got a big star that goes on my chest.
It's never been seen.
What was getting an OBE like?
No, it was good because my father was in the process of dying.
It took him a while.
And that was one of the last things I was able to tell him.
And he was very chuffed by it.
And that's a good time to please your dad when he's exiting.
The journey to come to Australia, what happened?
Well, I'd done a film called Sleeping Dogs with my friend Roger Donaldson, who subsequently went on to make lots of films on Hollywood.
It was his first film, my first film, and indeed pretty much everybody on the film, it was their first feature film.
It was the first feature film that had been made in New Zealand for 17 years.
The only person who'd actually had any experience at all was Michael Saracen, who was the cinematographer, and he'd been doing commercials and films in England.
I think it worked perhaps with Ridley Scott at that point.
and a wonderful actor called Warren Oates.
