There was almost no professional theatre then.

There were no films being made, so it wasn't a real possibility of a career.

So I put it aside and I spent about seven years making rather indifferent documentaries for what was called the National Film Unit then.

So it never really crossed my mind in any serious way.

I never really formed any serious ambition and I've never been a seriously ambitious person anyway.

And I rather shiver when I come across people that are evidently ambitious.

I think it's a very unattractive quality.

And it wasn't until actually I came to Australia that people started saying to me, you know, you're really pretty good.

I was so sort of staggered by that and so surprised that I'd never quite gotten over it.

And it's one reason why I've always held Australia with great affection because people have been much more generous to me here in many ways.

We're awkward with compliments and it's a New Zealand thing.

And we're also very suspicious of the tall poppy.

We have a sort of rather self-defeating culture.

We don't talk each other up and we certainly don't talk ourselves up.

It's better than people bullshitting, but it's not very constructive.
