But it's hard when you have a bunch of people who are contract labor entering a vineyard to do a job and they are treated like they're just another cog and you can replace them with someone else.
And it's like a vineyard would be turned into an Amazon warehouse where it's like someone from this warehouse can come do this same position because they're
the system is the same, but the system isn't the same.
So to me, that craftsmanship that we're talking about, it's not just winemaking.
It's not just production being small.
It is having hands on all pieces of the process.
And I find that
People, a lot of times, are like, oh, well, how come you can get a really great Chenin from the Loire or a really great Melon de Bourgogne, Muscadet, or whatever it is, or a really great Bordeaux.
How come I can get this for cheaper than I can get great California wine?
Part of the problem is, one, generational ownership.
So that land was paid off generations ago.
And yes, there are heavy taxes on heavy inheritance taxes, but families plan for that.
Here, someone will pay off land and then they'll sell it.
And then that person is trying to make up for the fact that they just took on a huge debt.
And then the other piece is
When there are more commercial interests involved, things like, I mean, Constellation Brands, you have shareholders, so you're not just paying off your land or paying your employees.
you're paying your investors.
And this is, that's true of like anything that is a commercial.
It doesn't have to be publicly traded or anything.
If you have shareholders, they want something back.
