I think that we become more conservative with a small C as we age.
Some people are conservative as youths.
Many people become more conservative.
Some have a creep upon them.
That's right.
I've given myself a lot of room to move right.
But again, my point is not about left-right.
It's about
Do we think about stability as the most important thing, about the protection of what we've painstakingly acquired?
Do we think about the future in the same way a younger person would?
And I mean, there's an ancient debate.
Cicero, in really the greatest defense of older people and power ever written in our tradition, says that
that older people plant trees for the future.
Well, they don't.
Aristotle says, no, older people live in memory rather than hope.
And when we look at specific issues, we find that the older you are, the less likely you are to prioritize climate change as a policy area.
Take immigration, which I think is an especially fascinating one.
We should note that immigration
you know, older people are whiter to an extreme extent.
