So it's a bit like someone offering you a salty electrolyte drink on a normal day.

You might go, yuck, no thanks.

But on a different day, say after you've exercised in the hot sun, that drink could be exactly what your body needed and it would taste fantastic.

Um, I know that's the case for me on a normal day versus a day when I play tennis in the sun for two hours, for example.

People have gotten excited about this research because it's the first to prove that insects display an emotion like behavior, which until now we thought only existed in mammals.

So the researchers who did this new study say their findings indicate that the insects do have some simple capacity to feel the world around them.

So in other words, they're capable of having a point of view and an inner life of sorts.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, you're completely right in saying that.

So from what I understand about the debate is that people are comfortable with saying that insects can sense the world around them, you know, they

can process information, they can learn things.

And they make decisions based on the things they perceive.

But they're much less comfortable saying that insects can evaluate these things as pleasant or unpleasant.

And this is something the researchers of the study were careful to steer clear off.

They state that their work does show evidence that insects can like or dislike something, but it doesn't prove that they feel pleasure or displeasure the way we do.

In fact, one of the researchers said that we don't yet understand what the bees truly experience, only that we can observe them displaying emotion like behaviors.

I I think it's really hard to extrapolate from just one study, to be honest.

I think a lot more research has to be done.
