When I was in school, our teacher gave each row of students half a teaspoon of liquid mercury to feel, smell, and juggle from hand to hand.
I would have been fourteen years old.
I remember being fascinated and loved the squiggle of the liquid as I moved it from hand to hand.
Listening to your show, I understand that we were all up close and personal with a toxic substance.
I am relieved to inform you that not one student, to the best of my knowledge, became sick or showed any ill effects in the years to come.
Presumably better informed teachers today no longer hand out liquid mercury to their students.
However, I confess to having been totally spellbound with the opportunity, especially trying to break it into smaller parts in the palm of my hand.
Mercury is the antidote to screen time, right?
Get your kids off the screen, get them to play with Mercury.
Okay, no, we are not endorsing that though, just to be very accurate.
Hi, Alex.
Nihao.
So when we talk about solar eclipses, we're talking about how the sun's light gets blocked out for a certain period of time.
And we know that light cues from the sun are really important and has an effect on almost all living things.
So for instance, it affects how active they are, when they sleep, when they wake, their circadian rhythms, how they navigate, and so on.
And interestingly, it's been observed that some animals behave a bit strangely just before and during an eclipse.
Alex, Michael, have either of you heard of any such stories?
Yeah, that's right.
