Newsom says California's troops were placed under Trump's control months ago in response to unrest in Los Angeles.

In response, a White House spokesperson says President Trump has exercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland from so-called violent riots.
It comes one day after a Trump-appointed federal judge temporarily blocked the president's effort to call up 200 of Oregon's own National Guard, calling it unjustified.
