Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. California Governor Gavin Newsom says he'll sue to get the Trump administration to return 300 of the state's National Guard members now being sent to Oregon. He also announced his intentions to sue. In response, a White House spokesperson says President Trump has exercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland from so-called violent riots. It comes one day after a Trump-appointed federal judge temporarily blocked the president's effort to call up 200 of Oregon's own National Guard, calling it unjustified.

In Norfolk, Virginia, President Trump addressed sailors celebrating the 250th birthday of the U.S. Navy on Sunday. Steve Walsh with member station WHRO in Norfolk has our story.
Before a backdrop of two Navy warships, President Trump reiterated that he planned to rid the military of so-called wokeness at a 250th anniversary celebration of the Navy in Norfolk, mirroring comments he made before a group of top military leaders Tuesday.

At least five people were killed and more than a dozen others injured after Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine overnight. NPR's Joanna Kakisis reports from Kiev that most of those killed were in Ukraine's far west, which borders the NATO country of Poland.
The Russian attacks also caused a fire at an industrial park in the western region of Lviv, as well as power cuts in some districts. The mayor of the city of Lviv said there were no military targets in the area. Russia's airstrikes also hit the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia, according to the regional governor. Apartment buildings and an industrial enterprise were hit. At least one person was killed and at least 10 injured. A prominent medical publisher has retracted a study suggesting apple cider vinegar can help people lose weight. MPS John Hamilton reports.
The study was published by the BMJ Group in March of 2024. It looked at 120 overweight or obese people in Lebanon. Those who got daily doses of apple cider vinegar for three months reportedly lost about 9% of their initial body weight. News outlets around the world covered the research. Within weeks, though, scientists began posting critiques saying the results were implausible and marred by errors. Then they took their concerns to the editors of the journal, BMJ Nutrition Prevention and Health.
