On social issues, one of which was abortion.

We spent a week on abortion doing research, and then we had a big discussion, and it was fine.

I okayed it with the principal, and I okayed it with other teachers, and everybody said that I should go for it.

So imagine my surprise when, as a substitute teacher, simply saying that I didn't support abortion here in Scotland, I got fired for it.

I was just shocked.

Well, I have to say, I mean, I lived for like eight years in England teaching and I never felt discriminated against.

But since moving to Scotland and doing some teaching up here, I've had a few different instances of discrimination.

feeling that I was being insulted because I was American.

And this particular incident rose to the level of being, you know, unlawful discrimination because of my religion and abortion, you know, my opinion on abortion.

So it really cemented

my own feelings about what's going on in Scotland.

I mean, it's crazy because people in America love Scotland, but it seems to be the opposite over here.

So I was really, really surprised.

Yes, I would agree with that.

And although I'm an active Catholic, I would say there wouldn't be...

You wouldn't be amiss to say there is a degree of anti-Catholicism in Scotland, even now.

There's a history in Scotland, particularly after the Reformation, where there was a time when Catholic people weren't allowed to do many things.

They weren't allowed to teach.

They weren't allowed to hold professional jobs, this, that, and the other.
