I tried to stop him.
But we had leaks and the boy needed to learn hard work.
He was only eight.

When footsteps sounded overhead, small ones running, heavier ones stomping, I knew Dad had lost his temper.
A roar rose in Dad's throat.
And I followed the footsteps through the living room, down the narrow hallway, and into my bedroom, throwing open the curtains on my bay window.
Sam fell or was pushed from the roof and slammed down on that wedge of corrugated steel.
He saw me, his wide brown eyes meeting mine and his mouth forming the shape of my name.
A scream tore from my throat as I threw open the window and reached for him, grabbing one small limp hand.
But his eyes had gone dull.
and his body bent unnaturally over the metal.
His head and legs dangling over either side.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth and oozed from his torso to drip down the ripped metal in a grotesque waterfall.
Sucking in a breath.
I blink away the image of that terrible day.
Tears burned my eyes, and I gripped the edge of the counter.
I know his death wasn't my fault.
But I could have stopped what came after.
Mom and dad didn't scream or cry.
