And then watching how Vinny perked up and was like, oh, you want to know that?
And then she started talking in a whole different way.

And it just taught me the dialectical nature of that where it's like you start being so curious respectfully and being mindful of the fact that there may be areas the person doesn't want to cover and being guided by that.
And I think making space for that of like I've learned a practice of setting the table and saying, look, like I would really love to hear everything that you're willing to share.
And if we hit upon realms where you don't want to talk about it, that's totally OK, too.
And kind of putting some of the agency very clearly and explicitly back in the other person's hands, but then also trusting them.

I think what I've learned at this point in my job having done it over and over is like how deeply deeply people want to be heard and how the majority of the time when you start asking the granular questions people start like rising to the occasion of those questions and really wanting to return and meet that with the details and that has been like a beautiful thing for me to learn from and the thing that's really transformed how I think about interviews.
Well, first I went to talks just like this talk and I would like lurk in the background.
Then I went up to the person was like, hey, would you be willing to like field my pitch?
And I went to someone from Rolling Stone.
I won't name any names.
And he was like, well, you know, that sounds interesting.
But like maybe I'd consider it if you told me like in the Hollywood movie version, who would Julia Roberts play?
And then I went to the bathroom and cried and was like, oh my God, I've just spent a year of my life on this.
Like no one's going to publish it.
I'm screwed.
And so I was so grateful when I met the guy who said, just write the piece.
And I finally got it in the hands of someone at the New Yorker who did, who was willing to read it.
