And it was the amazing, amazing Henry Finder, who is like a legendary mind in the world of
editing and journalism and um and he was willing to take it on and he's a genius of just cutting away the things that don't need to be there everything at the new yorker ultimately winds up getting structured as the cron like it will be chronological so don't resist it's like what i've learned across time and he's just such a beautiful editor that to be in his hands you don't even know what he did to make it so much better but suddenly there it is and you feel grateful
I mean, a list of a thousand things.
I mean, I learned a lot about how to be more organized because if you take on a project that comes across a span of months or years, like I learned about Scrivener and I learned to use basically a tool where I just filed away all of my interviews and all of my PDFs of litigation, all my photographs and just the full terrain and
And then because I'm a massive over reporter and over interviewer and just I'm like insatiable in that way.
I learned to just boil it down to like my rule of five.
Like what are the five things that have to come through?
in the story and who are the people within it that can carry me from the beginning to the end.
And that's how I wound up with the Fijian women at the center again is like that sense of narrative arc and motion because people when reading and investing in a longer story want to feel like they've been delivered somewhere beyond just the predictable place they might have thought a piece could go.
Well, the thing I'm not good at and cannot be pretending to speak to the art of is getting the folks who are like the problematic figures in a piece to talk.
Because so often when I was doing that reporting in Iraq, like,
They treated me like an actively thought that I was writing for the student newspaper.
And we're just like when I was younger, I just would constantly be like dismissed.
And then I realized, oh, that's like a real asset to like when they're not taking you seriously.
I kind of miss those days in a way where it's just like, oh, they are blowing you off and allowing you to wander about.
And they don't know that because of their misogyny and other variables, like don't even fathom that someone who looked as I did at the time could be doing substantive investigative work.
and navigating the frustrations of that was like fruitful in certain ways.
But wait, take me back to what was the starting point of that question?
I definitely have learned that like some of the best quotes I've gotten have been from people explaining why they can't talk to me.
And so when it comes to the power players in an equation, I mean, I certainly would honor it if someone was like, they just went through a traumatic experience.
