And those are the kinds of things that normally people like really light up to talk about.

He would not answer those questions.

Why do you think that was?

Well, I later learned at the time I was like, maybe he's just not a chatty person.

You know that feeling with interviews where like some people just like they're magically like just so charismatically open from the moment you start talking, you barely need to do anything.

And other people, you just don't know how to get anywhere with them.

And I truly was exasperated.

Like I almost gave up and thought, okay, there's so many other felony murder stories out there.

And to make a New Yorker story work, you really want to feel like all the parties involved, like actually want to be talking to you.

And it's not going to work if he's not

And then I decided in a last-ditch effort, he was encouraging me to come to Florida.

So I decided to fly down.

He was in a prison in Okaloosa, which is in the Florida Panhandle.

It's really not an easy place to get to.

And he had not had a visitor in five years.

And so I got a rental car.

I drove out there.

everything completely opened up from there and he became truly he's one of the most creative one of the most interesting one of the most amazing conversationalists i've ever known and he explained that basically he was very aware that there's a private security company that

listens to all of the phone calls when you're incarcerated.

We were using a for-profit like, I can't remember if it was Securus or GTL, it's changed with different prisons he's in, but there's different companies that basically have commandeered the phone lines and it's both very expensive to talk, but also hyper surveilled.
