And so he hated the idea that after having been so like screwed over by so many systems that they would now have access to all this personal information about his intimate life.

And so when we were able to talk one-on-one, I think something about my having shown up there

And actually, it was the fact that I was also turned away three times because of the pants that I was wearing, which the prison first said were scandalous.

And then they were too tight, my corduroys.

And then I came back in another pair.

I had come with a whole suitcase of clothes because I knew that they could try to mess with you in this way.

So I changed into other pants that were just plain black pants.

And they were like, well, those pants are see-through, which was not known

me I don't know they were claiming my pants were see-through in the hot Florida sun so then I changed a third pair which they said were not see-through but could become see-through if I started to sweat and so I was like losing my mind like this interview is not going to happen I'm his first visitor in five years but then luckily like with his help negotiating and my own just like pleading I got in to see him and I think something about that whole like process was like he recognized that I actually was

who I said I was, and something just opened up from there.

They were white pants.

So I see the argument, actually.

They turned out to be right about the whole, like, you will start to sweat in the prison yard of a Florida, Tallahassee, or not Tallahassee, Okaloosa picnic table.

Yeah.

But I thought I'd pulled a trick on them and they took away my paper and pen.

And so then I...

asked them for a copy of the prison's rules about clothing and then turned it over and used it as like my notepad but then they also took that so it was very much not an environment conducive to and a reminder of the fact that they do not want interviewing in those spaces and don't want to give incarcerated people the right to share their stories openly so right yeah that definitely was shaping the interview terrain is like the circumstances where we had to be

Yeah, I have learned some helpful lessons from my own reporting failures in the first Trump administration because I think I fell into a state of severe existential despair and started to think, okay, what is the point?

Am I becoming a vehicle for them distributing more fear and terror?

Are they using the media to actually just further the idea?
