We're constantly writing about the horrific things happening, specifically targeting very particular populations that they want to be terrorized.

I was just thinking, like, are we a tool of that?

And I mean, those questions remain for me.

But one of the things I really learned in watching what unfolded with the family separation crisis that you all probably remember very well is that this administration is always testing the boundaries of what they can get away with.

And they hit those boundaries sometimes because of communities actually taking to the streets.

And what happened with the family separation stuff is,

I had just finished the story I was describing that I started at the tail end of the Obama years about people being deported to their deaths.

And soon thereafter, when Trump took office, I was continuing to look into basically the decimation of asylum policy.

And I'd gotten, I'd heard and found some early accounts of people who'd been separated.

And I was chatting about it with my editor, like, is this something we could write about?

And he said, you know, we should really check with the administration and see if this is a formal policy.

And when I did that, I went to the administration.

They said it was not a thing that they were doing.

And I actually believed them because at that point in time, they were so loudly owning most of the draconian immigration enforcement policies.

What I later learned and what we all collectively found out is then that following spring, they unveiled the zero tolerance prosecutions and started the widespread practice of family separations.

And it became

ultimately clear much later thanks to incredible reporting by folks like Caitlin Dickerson we learned the story of how actually they had been doing early testing of that policy is this a thing that we can get away with can can we pull this off and when they did it in a large scale we saw both a lot of incredible reporting and tons of us you know telling those stories in so many different kinds of ways and then we also saw like mass

protest and folks taking to the streets.

And I think we're seeing that again with what's unfolded in the immigration enforcement actions in LA and Chicago and Minneapolis is like, it has taken a horrific level of, and not circumstantially, the killing of two white US citizens.
