So the reason I actually chose to go with the Fijian women is they had really lived the arc of the experience because they had been approached in their home countries.
In their beauty salons where they were working, someone said, oh, do you want a nice job making like 10,000 US dollars a month or something crazy?
They said yes, they agreed.
They instead went to a transit country, I think it was Dubai, and then found out they were going to Iraq.
And one of them was sexually assaulted by her employer while she was there.
I was basically able to follow the full trajectory all the way to the point in time when they got home.
And so they were safely situated.
And that was the big distinguishing factor for me is like, oftentimes it's really complex in a given reporting terrain.
Like when people have really valid reasons to feel afraid of telling their stories, a lot of the process is figuring out who's in a safe position to talk, who wants to talk because they were people who really, really wanted their stories to be known.
And so all of that came together and making me
I think a lot of it is being alongside like the day-to-day moments.
And I wound up being in some really critical moments with them, including the night that one of them had been sexually assaulted.
And I went to her CHU, her containerized housing unit, which was basically like a little shipping container where they were living.
They opened the door and one of them was crying and explained what had happened.
And all around the base, I had actually seen these posters for the military sexual assault hotline.
They claimed that they were like cracking down on sexual assault victims.
And here's this emergency hotline.
If anything happens, call it.
But these women didn't even have access to that type of phone because you had to be a service member or someone who had access to the U.S.
media sources to get that.
