So they had asked me if I'd be willing to call that number.

And that was one of those moments when like in journalism, you're taught like, oh, don't get involved.

And to me, my ethos has been like showing up first and foremost as a human being and disclosing that and being really transparent in the pieces.

And I called the hotline and literally no one answered the emergency hotline.

And so I called and called and it rang and rang.

And finally, when I got through, they said to call the company and I called the company and they said, we don't handle touchy feely issues.

You have to call the military.

So I was really with these women in that.

some intense processes.

And I think that becomes a bonding glue.

And with people I've written about in other instances, like in Iraq, they didn't have anywhere else to go.

It was really easy to like have time alongside them.

But with a lot of stories I have asked for people who are really, really busy, can I just sort of follow along and go with you while you pick your kids up at school and go with you to church and to just be along for some of the like softer moments in the day?

Oh, totally.

For me, it's very much a process.

Like I would feel so panicked if I had to do an interview that was just this is your interview.

This is your one shot.

Whereas for me, the vast majority of the time, like the number one thing I'm seeking is earning the right to return and the right to have many more conversations after that.

So in the first conversation, what I'm most of all wishing for is that

establishing care and establishing rapport and trust and mutual interest so that we can have many conversations thereafter.
