It was completely panic inducing because I had been working on this for a year and I got a call from a Washington Post reporter who had found like the military had actually messed up or someone at the, I don't remember if it was DOD or somewhere in the US government, they posted a PowerPoint slide they were using internally.
It's like training manual to be like, we found out about this human trafficking incident that this journalist is alleging.
So another journalist called me trying to like investigate the story.
And I was like, ah,
And mind you, I had been roundly rejected after thinking I went, I went to Iraq, I went to Afghanistan, I found the goods.
I found hundreds of people who could testify to having been like starved or abused on US bases.
So I thought that would be sufficient.
And I was pretty much roundly rejected by the publications that I'd sent it out to saying like,
People have war fatigue.
People also have a hard time like taking a risk on a young journalist.
And I met this guy who had been like, you know, you should just write the platonic ideal of the piece that you want to write.
And so I just sat down and crafted that version of the story.
But in terms of the shape shifting process, when the U.S.
government was getting involved, it was changing the course of history.
the investigation.
I benefited tremendously from that because I was a young journalist who did not know the art of the interview.
And I, in all honesty, had been really nervous to ask a lot of the core questions you have to ask to make a granular narrative investigative story work.
Like I was, I felt like, okay, this is so personal.
Maybe I'm being invasive.
