I was like, this is the perfect sort of psycho-geographical landscape because Aldersgate's that territory really between the Barbican and Clerkenwell.
So it's part in the city, so it's your part in or your part out.
I mean, there are lots of spaces like that in London, but I just like what a brilliant thing to think about.

It's such a brilliant place to locate the novel.
sort of something that used to be maybe aspirational in the 50s but that has fallen to ruin because of lack of funding because of neglect because of um uh you know no it's so perfect and isn't you've read that line about the lino on the floor is i mean basically that's lino under every building in london probably put down in the 50s i mean we've got some nice wood floor over here but i imagine it's over the lino i mean any stairwell in london
And somehow that's being more revealed now, I think, post-Brexit and as London's becoming so sort of mad with those new buildings going in, but everything else sort of looking a bit more derelict.
The facade somehow is falling away.
And so you kind of see it more that that 50s infrastructure is the stool that's there, that's holding.
No, I loved it.
I also loved, which we haven't quite come to yet, is the cafe that you're honouring in a way of those beautiful London cafes that were everywhere when I was growing up, which presumably had been sort of milk bars and then, you know, Italian cafes and you're going for your frothy coffee.
And it sort of slowly died off, I suppose, as Starbucks and everything has taken over.
And yet they're so key because people knew you, families worked there for generations and they're such a sort of part of the infrastructure.
And they are still there.
In fact, it's here on the cover, isn't it?
We go there and we eat our bacon and eggs and go... I like them when they're a bit more like they are in your book.
But it was, yeah, no, I was thinking it really reminded me, I think I first worked in London and I used to get, I worked in Oxford Street on the bookshop and I used to go to all those little cafes on Charing Cross Road.
And I was thinking it's probably the time when I first ever read people like Samuel Beckett and all those books.
