I used to get John Calder books and be very excited.

And I was thinking now, I don't know if I worked in that bookshop, if I'd be able to afford to buy books every time.

That's a good point.

But it did remind, okay, so the whole time I was a bit swotty when I was reading your book.

And it reminded me at that time because I thought, okay, there's a Beckett quote that really was at the back of me the whole time and I couldn't remember where it was from.

So yesterday I did a bit of poking around.

No.

And I found, like I do.

So it's like in Waiting for God Day, there's a line that the tears of the world are a constant quantity for each one who begins to weep somewhere else another stops.

The same is the truth of laughter.

He laughs.

I think it's very good.

But the whole time I was reading the book, I thought there's something very moving about that economy of pain and happiness and that we somehow have forgotten in society.

We're all sort of driven towards consumerism and pleasuring ourselves.

But there's something about that human balance between when someone else is suffering.

Yes, you might be happy, but maybe that's the time you should help and you should enable.

There's something social about the book that's being called to all the time.

And I think if you don't read the characters in the book as parts of the same person, if you see them as two people, there is this very sort of moving, like pulling for one person.

I'm going to keep this going while you have a moment.

I'm going to go to that audition.
