For gold status on American, the lowest tier, that requires 30,000 loyalty points.
That can be annual spending on a credit card, on the American Airlines co-branded credit card of $30,000.
It could be a combination of some flying and a lot of spending, or a lot of flying and a little spending.
But the higher tiers are more executive, platinum,
requires 200,000 loyalty points.
And a lot of people will get those through a mix, but there will be some small business owners and others who have a lot of spending on their credit card and can get that benefit just by steering their spending to the American Airlines card.
United has lowered its flight and spending requirements for requalification for 2022.
And they're allowing more miles with their co-branded credit card to count toward elite status.
But you still have to take a minimum of four flights to keep your status.
and meet those lowered flight and spending requirements, but they're still there.
Delta says it will automatically roll over status that you have for SkyMiles customers from this year into 2022.
In addition, Delta's done kind of a unique thing where you can pool your miles.
So the miles you earn this year will count with miles you earn next year towards status in 2023.
So some of it is to make it easier to re-qualify because they want to keep people hooked to these programs.
In American's case, you can easily see how a business traveler who is not traveling as much can adjust credit card use and steer some spending to the American Airlines card system.
and requalify for status without doing as much flying as he or she used to do.
And a lot of this is to address the change in travel patterns that we've seen in the pandemic.
And some of it is just taking advantage of the pandemic as a chance to rethink and relaunch.
And there's a lot of that going on in the loyalty program space.
