Interesting you say that because in the last couple of weeks during this cold spell, it was called Fern, right?
The winter storm Fern.
It caused a
pricing, real-time pricing in the areas where we're at here at PJM, but also across the country to really skyrocket.
I mean, you were looking at 10, 20 times, 100 times more than normal cost.
But what I see is this, back to your original, was this uncertainty of do we need bridge power or do we not?
What customers are saying is they don't know necessarily either when and if a utility will arrive.
So what they need is real flexibility.
And like I was saying,
These 10 to 20 megawatt large block engines enable facilities to begin at one capacity and threshold, hundreds of megawatts and scale up as demand evolves or things change.
The data centers may need to run continuously and off-grid for 8,000 plus hours a year.
Later on, maybe the utility grid bridges and they might have a different need for flexible dispatchable power.
that might run for hundreds or maybe thousands of hours a year for critical reliability, or maybe balancing intermittent wind and solar.
Many data centers are looking at these types of hybrid microgrids with renewables as well, or they might just be able to use the equipment for economic grid services and opportunities.
Like I was telling you, when the price of power goes up,
in certain times like during this winter storm you can save a lot of money on avoiding high cost energy from the grid but you can also look at coincident grid peak demand charges that are in your bill that like say in pgm might be 10 20 or more percent of your entire annual bill or charges for your megawatt demand during the coincident peak grid peaks in the summer and if you aren't
consuming power, you're lowering your tag and you're lowering the amount that they're going to charge you for these charges that are called capacity and transmission charges.
It can literally save tens of millions of dollars a year just for running
on-site power for maybe 50 hours a year.
So there's a lot of use cases and diversification that I'm seeing from my customers who are thinking about all the ways that they would use engines.
