more to focus, but the narrative and the discussion and the policy emphasis does tend to be on the home ownership side rather than on the private rental side.
When it comes to other issues like cost of living and pensions, perhaps we're dealing with more medium to longer term issues here, like we have the auto-enrollment that will hopefully increase pension savings with the
employee, the employer and the state all contributing to savings for individual workers.
And that will bring benefits over a period of 20, 30, 40 years when people hit retirement and have those additional savings set aside.
Maybe being a bit slow in doing it, we're finally getting there in 2025 and 2026.
But the benefits of that will be seen down the line when people do have those additional pension savings.
But there's no doubt we do have issues and you can say the government is running a surplus and why don't we
use more of this money to solve more of these problems.
The issue is doing it on a sustainable basis.
We have the money now, but in large part, it is very much dependent on these payments from US multinationals.
We've gone through the nature of them, but we also have the reliability of them.
There's lots of things that are important, but are they in the case that we just do them when we have these corporation tax receipts, and if they stop coming in,
Do we stop these important services?
I think they should put in a more sustainable footing on the likes of income tax, VAT, excise and taxes that we can sort of have a more solid basis of predicting rather than these corporation tax rates, which have boomed.
Nobody saw it coming.
There's no prediction it will fall, but it is sort of an unusual position to be in.
