And about halfway through, I just had this overwhelming sense that we needed to get you on the podcast.
So you're 35 years old.
You've built and scaled an incredible building business with Sentinel Homes in Hamilton that's done over 200 mil in building work.
From everyone we've talked to, you're the most courageous, curious and caring person they know.
And you've had, I think you've described it as a spicy upbringing in Tokoroa.
You've been through the shit and I just think your story is going to be so relatable for anyone who's pulling themselves out of the shit or on a journey of self-improvement.
But there was a reluctance from you to come on and that actually makes you our favourite type of guest because there is some ugliness in your story that you haven't spoken about publicly before.
And you took a few weeks to think about how you wanted to approach that and what, if anything, you wanted to say.
But you are here and we're going to see how we go.
But before we do get into it, can you tell us about your reservations about talking with us today?
Yeah, I think that framing is really good.
So I would encourage now, if you're open to it, to take us into their childhood and tell us a little bit of detail about what that upbringing was like.
Because Nate, where was your mum during all this when you were sort of going off?
I think we should say Chelsea, the Black Ferns Chelsea.
Yeah, sorry.
Let's introduce Chelsea, who's gone on to the very top of women's rugby in New Zealand.
There's also like the power, I know you're big on the power of moments and we've had a few chats about this and sort of words and language and the way perhaps your mum spoke about your dad and the effect that had on you.
Take us through the sort of the growing up.
So 10 and 11, you start to go on sort of autopilot.
And is that a fair description of kind of like what those next years look like?
